Representatives from the Doctor John Trotter Multiple Sclerosis Research Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital attended the St. Louis Chapter of UNICO National’s April meeting at Pan D’Olive on Manchester to give an award to the organization for its efforts in support of their work in conquering MS. This dreaded disease normally attacks young adults 25 to 45 in the prime of their lives.

Tina Hissong, in charge of fundraising for the Center, stated that she and Dr. Anna Cross, Director and head researcher for the MS division at Barnes, had been working together for 15 years to defeat this devastating disease. She informed the audience that 100% of the donations go to this end and none of the money donated goes to overhead.

Dr. Anna Cross thanked everyone for their support and informed them that the effort was not in vain.” I have witnessed the arrival of new medications that have helped patients immensely,” she said. “We apply to the Foundation for a project or need and generally they approve it. A report must be made to the Foundation to ensure that the dollars are being used responsibly. Your sacrifices are not in vain.” Dr. Cross informed everyone that a new drug, not yet FDA approved yet, has great promise. It is a maintenance drug, not a cure but very helpful. “We are moving forward in the fight”, she said.

She presented a picture of the doctors involved in this project to the president of the chapter, Jim Ferrante. In 2015, the organization’s cumulative contributions topped $50, 650.00, a significant milestone that was deeply appreciated by the Center. Jim Ferrante thanked Dr. Cross for the picture and promised that the chapter would continue to strive to contribute to this great cause.

A Bocce Tournament Fundraiser sponsored by UNICO will be held at the Bocce Club on the Hill on April 30. The organizations’ annual Golf Tournament will be held on June 27 at Tapawingo Golf Course. Call Jim Ferrente at 314-691-4307 for more information.
